About Lean On Me

The focus of Lean On Me is compassionate, non-judgemental support for family and friends of a loved one who has been murdered. The people involved are there for one another to be there for support and encouragement and to share some laughs and hugs with our group members. It is through our personal encounters that we can heal and garner strength.

First, with participation in the 12-week program led by a professional grief and bereavement facilitator and counsellor. The program format has been modeled from Ms. Lula M. Redmond, RN, MS, LMFT, FT an American expert in the field of trauma recovery for family members of homicide victims. This is an emotionally difficult experience for many people as it delves into the grieving process but it is also a powerful way of healing, creating bonds with people who can relate, and working towards a small sense of personal empowerment and peace.

Second, with participation in monthly group get togethers. This is a more casual way of touching base with each other and still being able to show or receive support as needed. Family and friends are encouraged to participate because we know how difficult these times can be on a family unit with each person experiencing their own intense emotions. Often, preliminary hearings may be held years after the incident, then a trial follows possibly months or years after that. These dates, in addition to birthdays and other significant dates, are more emotionally, mentally, and socially taxing than anyone anticipates. Throughout the years that follow violent death, there are always times when it is good to know that someone is thinking about you and is there to listen with understanding and compassion. We also use these opportunities to give interested members a chance to explore a variety of effective healing methods based on mind-body-spirit such as yoga, meditation, smudging, or a group walk among nature. Any time a member has benefited from a new technique we want to share it with the others so they can benefit as well. Many people do not make the time for themselves or do not have the courage to try a new thing on their own. We make easy and enjoyable because sometimes that time for yourself is exactly what is needed.

We are hopeful that the years ahead will bring many positive activities and health and well-being for you and all the members of "Lean On Me" and their families.

On June 29th 2011, Lean On Me was honoured to be the recipient of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Award. Click here to read more.
